Polycystic Ovary Syndrome
Some individuals with eating disorders like Anorexia, Bulimia or Compulsive Overeating also suffer from Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). PCOS is a medical disorder that throws the individual's hormones out of balance. PCOS affects 10 percent of woman, with onset usually during the teen years. Symptoms of the disorder include:
  • Weight gain
  • Trouble losing weight
  • Binge eating
  • Acne
  • Excessive hair growth on face and body
  • Thinning hair and hair loss on scalp
  • Irregular, heavy or absent periods
  • Infertility
Because individuals who have Polycystic Ovary Syndrome are often insulin resistant (their bodies have difficulty using insulin), they develop abnormal blood sugar levels. These abnormal blood sugar levels can lead to cravings for foods, binge eating and eventual weight gain. The physical changes associated with PCOS can also cause body image dissatisfaction leading to emotional eating. These factors combined can be a dangerous recipe for the development of an eating disorder like Anorexia, Bulimia or Compulsive Overeating. Rader Programs understands the nuances and difficulties of PCOS complicated by an eating disorder and have put together a program that addresses the medical, emotional, nutritional and social components necessary to overcome the two disorders.
